There are those born with powers beyond comprehension. Some call them blessings — proof that the gods favor them, and destined them to rule. Others call them stolen, citing the cost of bearing them as proof of divine punishment. For Carter, they're another commodity to trade. Everything has a price, and their price is years and lives. Legal or not, the empire’s laws are barriers to maneuver around, not to heed. For others, this barrier is too great to let stand, and they seek his help, promising great rewards.
